Studying abroad can be a life-changing experience, but it can also be costly. As a student, it's important to find ways to make your travel budget-friendly without compromising on the quality of your experience. Here are some budget-friendly travel tips to help you make the most of your time studying abroad!

Plan Ahead: One of the best ways to save money on your study abroad trip is to plan ahead. Research the cost of living in your destination country, look for affordable accommodation options, and create a realistic budget for your trip.
Apply for Scholarships and Grants: Many universities and organizations offer scholarships and grants to help students fund their study abroad trips. Look for opportunities to apply for financial aid to reduce the overall cost of your travel expenses. Personally I used financial aid to help fund my study abroad experience. You will never regret going, you'll only regret that you didn't go out and experience the world.
Use Student Discounts: As a student, you are eligible for a variety of discounts on transportation, accommodation, attractions, and more. Make sure to carry your student ID with you at all times and inquire about student rates wherever you go. I was able to use my student card at most museums, cathedrals, castles, etc. and get a discount.
Cook Your Own Meals: Eating out can quickly add up, especially in popular tourist destinations. To save money on food, consider cooking your own meals or shopping at local markets for affordable ingredients. This can also be a great way to experience the local culture. I started doing this towards the end of my abroad experience because I was getting super broke. Although, definitely splurge every once in a while and go get some good food from the place you are visiting. It was very worth it and I still think about all of the good food I had.
Take Advantage of Public Transportation: Instead of relying on taxis or private tours which quickly adds up, use public transportation to get around. Many cities offer student discounts on public transportation, making it a cost-effective way to explore your destination. Read more on my "public transportation" blog post to find out more!
Look for Free or Low-Cost Activities: Studying abroad doesn't have to break the bank. Look for free or low-cost activities in your destination, such as visiting parks, museums with student discounts, attending local events, or exploring iconic landmarks on foot.
Travel Off-Peak: If possible, avoid traveling during peak tourist seasons when prices are higher. Consider studying abroad during the shoulder season or off-peak months to take advantage of lower prices on accommodations, flights, and activities. I studied abroad in the spring which was mostly off season for traveling. I would honestly even recommend going in the spring because of this. It was super cold and I had to pack lots of winter coats but still worth it to see popular sightseeing places not crowded.
Share Costs with Other Students: If you're traveling with other students from your program, consider sharing costs for accommodations, meals, and transportation. This can help reduce expenses and create new friendships. I stayed in lots of hostels and shared airbnbs with friends. Learn more about "traveling cheap" on my page!
By following these budget-friendly travel tips, you can make the most of your study abroad experience without overspending. Remember, studying abroad is about immersing yourself in a new culture, gaining valuable experiences, and creating memories that will last a lifetime – all while being mindful of your finances. Safe travels and enjoy your study abroad adventure!
